In my last blog post “The Blueprint”, I said what I and many others have said out loud: in the age of AI, knowledge work is cooked and therefore, it naturally follows that this very likely is my last corporate job. The framework was pretty simple – use Genesis as the backbone to encourage others to become creators – to build.
But there is a problem with blueprints … and anyone that has used them to build something knows that every beautiful blueprint needs to be grounded in reality! You need to provide guardrails, ground rules, +terms of service, otherwise your contractor can run up a bill very quick!
So, I decided that YLCJ needed something stronger than a blueprint. It needs a Constitution. That might sound dramatic. It is not … it is deliberate. I needed to give myself some rules to govern what this project can and will become! And, more importantly, I needed to make sure that my voice is grounded in truths.
Preamble
YLCJ is founded on Biblical truths for an AI economy / world. And seeing how The Blueprint was rooted in the Old Testament – Genesis to be exact – I thought it important to reach out to the New Testament for setting some ground rules for this site!
The YLCJ Constitution is grounded in the Book of James. Not because this is a church - it is not. Not because I am a preacher - I am not. It is grounded in James because James is the most practical book in the New Testament, and because James is the name of my brother. That is personal. This whole site is personal.
Five Articles
As I was putting this thing together, using James, I settled on 5 guardrails …
Article I says that this is not a pulpit. As I previously mentioned, this is not a church and I am not a preacher. I take the words of James 3:1 seriously, and the intent of YLCJ is to provide honest perspective on real world experience with AI. I want to share what I have learned at work, at home and wherever else I see practical everyday applications. And I want to do so with care, accuracy and humility. There will be times where Scripture is invoked, and that is because I am attempting to seek Biblical truths in a world that is being drastically shaped by AI – NOT because I am an authority!
Article II chooses wisdom over cleverness. The internet is full of “influencers” peddling algorithmically produced echo-chamber psychobabble. And the AI space is no different – full of loud voices selling certainties about an uncertain future. As of recent, some of those voices have been very negative. Just this week, a dear friend forwarded me a very dark and ominous memo about the future of AI. My friend was genuinely frightened. YLCJ does not intend to be overly pessimistic or optimistic about these things. The standard here is not “does this sound smart?” We just want to help everyday people.
Article III commits to educating without dividing. The internet, social media and traditional media already do enough to split people into camps. And, again, the AI space is no different – we are currently seeing this with optimists versus doomers – or more commonly the Star Trek versus Terminator versions of AI. YLCJ will seek to address issues in ways that hopefully bring everyday people together to work towards shared challenges and opportunities. We will not exploit these issues for attention.
Article IV refuses to boast about tomorrow, and we do not intend to profit from any prognostications! The site exists to help you prepare, not to sell you certainty that no one possesses. If that is what you are after, the websites and tools out there are numbered in the tens of thousands. YLCJ thinks it is wise to think about tomorrow in ways to help you and your family. And we certainly believe you should be prepared for it – with wisdom and faith!
Article V speaks for everyday people. The AI revolution is not landing equally. Some of you can already see this. For others of you, you will likely soon see this come true. YLCJ exists to be a practical voice for the person who shows up and does the job … and a call to leaders who have the power to ensure this transition is handled with dignity. As a leader in my own business, I feel an immense obligation to make sure our knowledge workers understand the changing landscape and that I provide them tools to help navigate it.
That is the Constitution. Five articles. Five principles from the Book of James. One commitment: to be honest, to be helpful, and to do this the right way.
